Motorcycle riders killed in crash with semi-truck

While motorcycle riders in many parts of the United States are putting their bikes in garages due to cold, wet weather, motorcycle riders across Arizona are still enjoying the freedom of riding in ideal weather. However, in spite of good riding conditions, motorcycle riders are still at risk of being injured by inattentive drivers.

This notion is exemplified through the story of two people who were killed on Wednesday while riding a motorcycle in Phoenix. According to an report, the riders (who were later identified as Arizona Department of Corrections officers) hit the trailer of a semi-truck that was turning onto a street in front of them.

Authorities report that after the motorcycle hit the trailer, it lost control and careened into a ditch nearby. The rider and passenger were thrown from the bike (and were still in the street) when they were struck by passing vehicles who could not stop in time. First responders found that one of the riders was wearing a helmet, while the other was not.

While the accident is still under investigation, police do not suspect that alcohol was involved in the crash. Meanwhile, the outcome of the investigation could have significant legal implications for the truck driver as well as the trucking company. If it is determined that the driver was at fault, he (and/or the company) could be held liable for the lives lost in the accident through a wrongful death lawsuit. Such a claim seeks compensation for lost future income, loss of companionship and emotional distress suffered by family members.

If you have questions about wrongful death lawsuits, an experienced personal injury lawyer can help.
