Hit and run accident kills Phoenix pedestrian

Hit and run accidents bring about a sense of outrage and dread that few crimes can manifest. We expect better from people when accidents occur, which is likely why leaving the scene of an accident is considered a crime against the public.

Phoenix police are looking for the driver of a van that struck and killed a pedestrian in the early hours of Tuesday morning. According to an report, the accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Indian Road near 38th Avenue. A witness to the accident explained that the driver did not stop and to see if the pedestrian was injured. First responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene of the accident.

Police describe the offending vehicle as a full size white van, and are asking the public for help in identifying the driver. They say that the van is likely to have some front-end damage, and the driver could be charged with a felony.

Aside from the criminal implications, the family of the person killed in the accident could pursue a wrongful death suit against the driver of the van, and the insurer, if one is covering the offending driver. A wrongful death lawsuit seeks monetary damages for the future lost wages that the deceased could have earned had he or she not been killed, as well as loss of companionship and emotional distress that the family suffers.

Pedestrian accidents are a serious issue in areas where center islands are thin and crosswalks are not present for large stretches of roads; which is unfortunately common throughout the area.
