Nissan, Honda and Mazda issue airbag recalls

2014 is definitely the year for auto recalls. In addition to the millions of cars recalled by General Motors to address concerns over ignition switches in a number of vehicles, several Japanese automakers are asking consumers to bring vehicles in for repairs to correct potential issues with airbags. According to a report provided by ABC News, Honda, Mazda and Nissan are recalling millions of vehicles with potentially defective airbags.

Specifically, there are concerns that the airbags could explode, instead of deploying properly; which could injure passengers and prevent them from having the soft impact they provide. Without airbags, passengers in a car accident could potentially suffer severe injuries by hitting their heads on dashboards, steering wheels, or even on windows.

Because of this, the latest recalls are important for manufacturers as well as consumers. As a matter of law, car makers have a continuing duty to inform consumers of potential defects that could create unreasonable hazards that could put consumers at risk, and to correct these hazards. If an automaker fails to these things, and a consumer is harmed by a defect that should have been corrected, the automaker could possibly be held liable.

In the meantime, the recalls affect more than two million Hondas, 755,000 Nissan models and 2.27 million Toyotas. Fortunately, no accidents have been attributed to the potentially defective airbags so far, but this may change as further investigations into the defects reveal additional information.

If you have questions about how defects could affect your car accident case, an experienced personal injury attorney can advise you.
