The day parents head to the hospital or birthing center of their choice to bring their new family member into the world is typically filled with a number of emotions. From excitement to worry, there is no telling how things will go, and the anticipation can be overwhelming. While many Arizona parents will make it through labor and delivery with few to no issues, there are others who may experience a number of problems that could cause personal injury to either the mother, child or both.
Complications during labor and delivery can range in their severity. Some may have few long-term effects on the mother and/or child, while others can lead to life-long struggles. Some of the common causes of birth injury include:
- Large babies
- Prolonged labor
- Abnormal birthing presentation
During delivery, parents depend on medical staff to walk them through any of these or other issues and to help them make the best decision possible with the hopes of avoiding any harm to their child. Unfortunately, medical mistakes are sometimes made. Failure to act in a timely manner, misuse of medical equipment, misdiagnosis and a variety of other problems may occur and potentially result in injuries.
Arizona mothers who were injured during labor and delivery, or parents whose child was injured due to complications that were mishandled by medical staff, may be entitled to seek compensation. Medical malpractice claims can be filed against the facility and/or staff considered responsible. Damages for any personal injury suffered may be awarded for any current and estimated future monetary losses suffered as a result of any medical error.
