Crash with light rail train injures driver, several others

Driving in downtown Phoenix can be treacherous. Drivers must pay attention to one-way streets, pedestrian traffic and light rail trains. With all of these hazards and interactive distractions (e.g. cell phones, touch screen systems) it is no wonder that more traffic accidents occur in this region of the city.

However, yesterday a driver was injured after her SUV was struck by a light rail train. According to an azfamily.com report, the crash occurred just after 3:00 p.m. at Central Avenue and Roosevelt. While the accident is still under investigation, police believe that the accident happened when the driver ran a traffic signal.

First responders took several people to the hospital to treat minor injuries, but it appears that the driver of the SUV was seriously injured. She was taken to the hospital as a trauma patient.

The story exemplifies the need (and the legal duty) for Arizona drivers to use reasonable care when driving. Part of this duty involves making sure that a driver has the right of way when making a turn or waiting for traffic to clear before entering an intersection. Not only are there obvious physical consequences to breaching the duty of due care (as shown by the story above), there are financial consequences as well. A driver who causes an accident can be held liable for the injuries suffered in a crash, the pain and suffering endured by the injured party, as well as lost wages (from not being able to work).

If you have been injured by a driver who was intoxicated, distracted or otherwise driving erratically, an experienced personal injury lawyer can help.
