More than three million car seats recalled

While we wrote a few weeks ago about the increase in auto recalls in 2013, it appears that the season of recalls will continue. Last week, child car seat maker Graco announced that it would issue a recall that would affect millions of seats manufactured between 2009 and 2011.

According to a report, the Atlanta-based manufacturer had received numerous complaints that dried liquids and some foods could cause the latches to become stuck in the buckle that secure a child in the seat.

While there have been no reports of children being injured because of the potentially dangerous buckles, the prospect of such injuries (along with the complaints) prompted the manufacturer to issue the recall.

Overall, the recall will affect 3.7 million car seats sold, and it stands to be the fourth-largest child safety seat recall in U.S. history.

Recalls are an important function for manufacturers because they allow them to respond to complaints about defective products and avoid liability for potential accidents. As a matter of law, manufacturers have a duty to correct issues that could put consumers at risk of harm when using their products. If they fail to do so, and the uncorrected problem causes an accident (or causes injury in a crash) the manufacturer could be held liable. As such, a recall puts consumers on notice that they may (and should) replace their products.

For consumers who have been injured by products that have been subject to recall, an experienced attorney can evaluate their situation and help in securing compensation.
