Are drowsy drivers a danger on Arizona roads?

If you are planning a long road trip for the summer, you are probably wondering if weather conditions will cooperate, how children will be occupied while in the car, and whether your vehicle is in good working order. While these are all valid concerns, drivers should be wary of the dangers of drowsy driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 100,000 crashes are attributable to drowsy driving. In fact, these accidents claim at least 1500 lives and leave more than 70,000 injured each year.

Because of this, drivers must be aware of the dangers of drowsy driving and take precautions to avoid such situations. Simply put, when you feel yourself yawning excessively, rubbing your eyes constantly or even turning up the radio to hold your attention, it may be time to pull over.

Also, driving while sleepy may have legal consequences. Drivers in Arizona are tasked with the duty to use reasonable care while behind the wheel. This means that they must act as a reasonable person would while driving. If a person drives while drowsy and ends up crashing into another vehicle, this could be viewed as a failure to use reasonable care, and the person could be held liable.

The people injured in such a crash could bring a lawsuit to collect monetary damages, including pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages and rehabilitative costs. If you have questions about your rights and options after being in a crash with at drowsy driver, an experienced attorney can help.
